Fianna Fáil candidate Jim Gavin has announced he is withdrawing from the Irish presidential election right away.

He was scheduled to be a candidate among three competing for the role of Irish president, alongside Independent TD Catherine Connolly and Fine Gael's Heather Humphreys.

Nonetheless, Sunday night he said in a statement he had "made a mistake inconsistent with his values and his personal standards."

"Taking all these considerations on board, I have decided to exit the presidential race immediately and return to the arms of my family," he declared in his announcement.
